Plot: What’s it all about? As a (slightly) aging movie fanatic, I’ve had to admit to myself recently that much of my reverence for certain films has as much to do with my growing up with them as their inherent qualities. It takes a lot to grab my interest these days. As it happens, more of what does just that tends to be found at home on the small screen these days than in my local movie theater. I simply find that artists are more imaginative and driven to make something special when smaller numbers are involved. I believe there’s more of an expectation on television to create good, solid characters and an engaging story if, for no other reason, because that medium simply doesn’t lend itself to the kind of obscene budgets needed to create ridiculous, over-the-top spectacles week after week. I think computer-generated special effects, while they have their place and can be (and have been) used to wonderfully in many films, are probably the worst thing ever to happen to motion pictures. One of my favorite artists is Peter Gabriel, and he has a quote that I love to cite when talking about movies compared to television: “giving an artist complete freedom is the worst thing you can do for the work”. Necessity, it would seem, truly is the mother of invention. And, by extension, when you can invent anything you feel like by throwing enough money at it, then there’s no necessity in being creative about ...

Plot: What’s it all about? I never thought I’d say this about a movie studio, but I actually kind of feel bad for Warner Brothers. You see now that the Harry Potter and Batman franchises have run their course, whatever are they going to do in regard to profit? I jest, of course, as Warner has been probably the top studio in Hollywood for years, but there is an element of truth there. Now that Harry Potter has finally killed Voldermort and the streets of Gotham have their caped crusader (and all is presumably well), that’s a lot of money that potential moviegoers will be looking to spend. What’s a movie studio to do? Disney found success a few years back when they gave us a live-action version of Alice in Wonderland and more recently with Oz: The Great and Powerful. So Warner, taking a cue from the mouse, went back to the books and we’re now presented with Jack the Giant Slayer – a somewhat stylized version of the popular children’s tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. The man behind the camera is Bryan Singer, director of The Usual Suspects and a few of the X-Men films. Warner invested quite a bit of change in this adaptation, did it work? We all know the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and as I mentioned, this isn’t the literal adaption, but the general premise is still the same. Jack (Nicholas Hoult) is sent to the local market to sell a prized ...

Plot: What’s it all about? In the past twelve months we’ve been inundated with movies about Lincoln. Granted Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter isn’t exactly the biopic that Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln was, but the 16th President’s name was in the title. We now have Killing Lincoln, a made for television movie that premiered on the National Geographic channel to the highest ratings the channel has ever seen. It’s narrated by Tom Hanks and was based on the book by television newsman Bill O’Reilly. Admittedly I’ve never been that much into politics, but I’ll be the first to agree that essentially every President of the United States has had a hard, thankless job. And when looking back, it’s usually a toss up as to who the best President really was (Washington or Lincoln). Lincoln did end slavery, and managed to preside over a country that was literally divided. What Killing Lincoln does is chronicle the last few weeks of Lincoln’s life in very dramatic fashion. Let’s take a look. There’s a lot of mystery and intrigue when it comes to the Lincoln assassination. Yes, we’ve learned in History class that it was John Wilkes Booth (Jesse Johnson) that killed him, but the actual facts of what really happened, it seems, will forever be a mystery. Killing Lincoln gives us a bit more insight into John Wilkes Booth, a prominent actor from a family of actors, and gives him a bit more depth. History has somewhat written off Booth as a deranged psychopath ...

Plot: What’s it all about? At the most basic level, you could probably break down the movie-going public into two categories: those who will find humor in a twelve-year-old girl gleefully dismembering and/or murdering bad guys while nonchalantly spewing out “the c word” and those who will not. Your enjoyment of “Kick-Ass” as a film, make no mistake, will depend greatly upon which of these two camps you personally fall into. The more conservative or easily shocked amongst you simply need not apply. The good news is that, at least now that “Kick-Ass” is comfortably at home on Blu-ray and no longer in theaters, most of those people are far less likely to mistakenly see the film and come away scarred for life. As for the rest of you, sit down and enjoy – you’re in for one hell of a good time. “Kick-Ass” is brutal, relentless, unabashed fun. It doesn’t care who it offends or what lines it has to cross to stay true to its tone, bucking conventions as flagrantly as most films adhere to them. And why shouldn’t it? Its comic book origins are reportedly even more in-you-face offensive and insensitive, lending the film adaptation a certain “buyer beware” feel, as if those too lazy to educate themselves on the books this film draws inspiration from deserve everything their ignorance earns them for 117 minutes. The film follows the improbable (if initially hyper-realistic) exploits of Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson), a high-school outcast who gets it ...

Plot: What’s it all about? Last Fall I was stumbling around the internet and came across a trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful. Interesting. After all, I’m hard-pressed to find anyone out there who hasn’t either seen and/or loved The Wizard of Oz, it’s simply one of the most beloved films of all-time. And having spent my time in Kansas (even graduating from college there) I’ve heard just about every joke imaginable regarding the aforementioned title. With the advent of more comic book movies, we’re getting more “origin” stories or better known to us as prequels. So when director Sam Raimi took it upon himself to do this film, I’m sure he tread very carefully. After all The Wizard of Oz is like Hollywood royalty and you don’t really want to mess with that. Still, it begs the question in that can you have a movie with “Oz” in the title with no Dorothy, no Toto, no Scarecrow, Tin Man or Lion? Evidently you can. Oz: The Great and Powerful tells the tale of, well, Oz (James Franco) an illusionist who’s part of a traveling circus in Kansas. He’s good, but not great and seems to lack a certain moral fiber. So when he’s literally run out of town, he hops on board a hot air balloon, gets caught in a twister and, well, you know how that goes. He finds himself in a strange place only to be greeted by Theodora (Mila Kunis), someone who believes Oz to ...

Plot: What’s it all about? When “Superman: The Movie” was released in December of 1978, I was almost exactly one month old. I wouldn’t know anything about it for several more years, but Richard Donner had just done something that no other director before him had ever managed to accomplish (and, I would argue, that any director would ever so exquisitely do again). For an entire generation of film-goers, comic book fans, and children too young to do much of anything but leap from their beds with towels wrapped around their necks, “Superman: The Movie” became an instant pop-culture and artistic classic, elevating an iconic symbol of Americana to never-before-dreamt-of levels of respect and cinematic spectacle. The marketing materials famously promised “You’ll Believe a Man Can Fly”, and the film delivered on that promise. Christopher Reeve, an unknown at the time, would become not only the quintessential Man of Steel for legions of fans, but also move on to achieve tremendous status, both on and (as fate would have it, even more so) off the silver screen. Gene Hackman made Lex Luthor a more comical figure than in the comic books, but brought such a gravitas to the role that it instantly became his own. Margot Kidder as Lois Lane possessed all of the spunk, energy and light-heartedly empathetic nature that was so sorely lacking in future big-screen incarnations of her character. Never before or since has a film so captured the imagination of children and adults alike, so thrilled ...

Plot: What’s it all about? Sy Parrish (Robin Williams) has worked in photo department at SavMart for over a decade and in that time, he has made sure no one got back flawed photos. He takes his time and checks each print for color, contrast, and sharpness, even calibrating the machines to make sure the levels are never out of alignment. But while he cares for everyone’s photos, he takes a special interest in those brought in by the Yorkin family, Nina (Connie Nielsen), Will (Michael Vartan), and their young son Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy has been developing their photos since before Jake was even born and as such, he has watched this family grow and develop. But in this time, Sy himself has experience little in his personal life, as he has no friends, no family, and at home, his only pictures are of the Yorkins, prints he stole from work. As time has passed, Sy has latched onto the Yorkins as his own family, even imagining himself as Uncle Sy, even though the Yorkins know little about him, aside from his name and profession. Soon however, Sy begins to notice things about them, a book on trouble romances, a father’s stern treatment of his son, and even some photos that show that not all is well with the Yorkins. Even though he is just a photo clerk, he is determined to do more than look this time, but will his actions simply further the family’s decline? As a ...

Plot: What’s it all about? We are starting to see a return to more R rated action movies lately. With the success of The Expendables recently, the studios are hoping to bank on the success while the audience demands it. We’ve seen quite a few so far this year and each to varying degrees of success (both in terms of quality and box office). That brings us to Parker. Jason Statham stars as the title character. He is essentially a crook with a Robin Hood style code of conduct. He doesn’t rob from the less fortunate. As the film begins, we see a heist take place during a state carnival. The crew consists of five members (including Parker) and the heist is a success. When the crew wants to bring Parker in on another upcoming heist, he refuses. His crew decides that there is no further use for him. There is a small scuffle in the getaway vehicle and Parker is left for dead. This leads us to the middle of the film where Parker assumes a new identity and then meets Leslie Rogers (Jenifer Lopez). The film begins with a bang and mostly maintains a steady pace, but there is a feeling that some additional editing would have helped. In an unusual turn, the Lopez character isn’t really a love interest to the Parker character. She is basically an unsuccessful real estate agent who thinks she has landed a major commission when Parker shows interest in one of her properties. She quickly catches onto his scheme and instead of ratting him out to the ...

Plot: What’s it all about? I’m not sure what it is about us as people and our weird fascination with the occult and surreal. Ok, I’ll get right to the point – why are we fascinated with aliens? I’ve no doubt that we’re not alone in the universe and I think that we’re pretty naive to think otherwise. However it seems that movies about aliens and alien possession have been around for ages and maybe it’s just me, but are there more of them now? I suppose we have to cite the Paranormal Activity series of films and the offspring of impostors that it would inevitably produce. I don’t know, there’ just seems to be a lot of those types of films around. And, oddly enough, though I believe in aliens, I just find it hard to swallow that so many people claim they were kidnapped or possessed by aliens. But hey, I’m a cynic. That aside, Dark Skies is a movie that was in the theaters for a blink of an eye and now it’s arrived on Blu-Ray. Dare we proceed? Lacy Barrett (Keri Russell) is a Realtor trying to make ends meet while her unemployed husband, Daniel (Josh Hamilton), an architect, looks for work. Jesse (Dakota Goyo) is a typical teenager, interested in girls and is on the verge of losing his innocence. Younger brother Sam (Kadan Rockett) seems to be the one who’s more in touch with the more mystical side of things, though. When some strange ...

Plot: What’s it all about? Arthur (Claude Brasseur) and Franz (Sami Frey) have become bored with life’s repetitive motions, to the point where even crime is often dull. Then again, they’re small-time operators in the crime world, though they have aspirations to climb the ladder of success. The two might work together, but they’re quite different, as Arthur is an arrogant, hulkish man and Franz is more the quiet, sensitive type of gentleman. One new fold in their lives is the presence of Odile (Anna Karina), a beautiful young woman who attends the same English language class as them. The two men are drawn to her from the start, due to her good looks and charisma, but they also have a financial reason to treasure her. You see, she lives in a boarding house and in that same dwelling, one of the cohabitants happens to have a trove of wealth on hand. The riches haven’t even been hidden, all you have to do is get inside and open the cupboard to see the loot. Of course, Arthur and Franz want to break in and make off with the riches, but they’ll need Odile’s assistance. Even though she has feelings for both men, especially in Arthur’s case, she is hesitant about helping them with the criminal effort. When she agrees however, things spin out of control, as an early attempt fails, distrust grows between the trio, and outsiders now want the wealth for themselves. Will anyone wind up with the loot ...
