Plot: What’s it about?

Those insane little Rabbids have returned and this time, they’re taking over your living room. Rabbids: Alive and Kicking brings the Rabbids’ special brand of party games to the Kinect, which is an ideal partnership. The Kinect’s motion tracking is perfect for the Rabbids’ mini-games, as it can take the experience to a whole new level. And thanks to the augmented reality used in the game, that means the Rabbids will really be in your house, though you do get to kick them. I am a big fan of the Rabbids series, as the characters are hilarious and the mini-games are usually a lot of fun. Rabbids: Alive and Kicking offers over 30 mini-games to explore, so there is a good deal of content on board. The games are varied and none overlap with each other, so each one is a unique experience and not just a retread.

One inclusion I love in this game is that one to four players can be involved. This is usually two teams of two, but even so, being able to have a group included is most welcome. And the second player doesn’t just mirror the first as in some Kinect titles, instead some of the games are designed with two players in mind. Work together to saw a Rabbid in half for example, in which you have to work together, lumberjack style. Some games do indeed let all four players participate at once and while things can get hectic, the Kinect seems to keep up well enough. I found no consistent problems in terms of Kinect’s recognition, which is great considering how varied the gestures required can be in this game. Some of the games are tricky, but if you’re quick enough and accurate with your gestures, the game will give you proper credit.

Rabbids: Alive and Kicking is best played in a group situation, especially in a party atmosphere. I had fun popping in to run a few mini-games by myself sometimes, but the game really kicks into high gear in a social environment. You’re more likely to go wild with your gestures and of course, watching others provides countless laughs. You can even take photos of the more outlandish moments, then share them with friends. The augmented reality was well implemented, as it was a blast to stomp Rabbids as they crept into my game room. I played the game alone, with a single friend, and in a decent sized group and in each case, Rabbids: Alive and Kicking delivered a fun experience. I highly recommend it to those who play Kinect with friends, but the game holds up even as a single player experience. Kinect proves to be the perfect showcase for the Rabbids’ twisted brand of fun, so Rabbids: Alive and Kicking is highly recommended.

Video: How does it look?

As you’d expect from a Rabbids game, the visuals are colorful and in the vein of madcap cartoons. The Rabbids look as cute and disturbing as always, which is great news. This might be a mini-game collection, but a lot of detail was put into the visuals, so all of the games look good. While Kinect games don’t always offer up impressive visuals, Rabbids: Alive and Kicking does and really looks terrific.

Audio: How does it sound?

The sound design is manic and hyper, just like those lovable Rabbids. The music gels with the games well, setting a frantic pace that helps keep you firing on all cylinders. The sound effects are wacky, as they should be, while the Rabbids sound as insane as ever. Not the kind of sound design that is deep and complex per se, but the game’s audio needs are covered and the sound design fit the subject matter perfectly.
