Plot: What’s it about?

I love the trend of older games being revamped and released for download on current consoles, so I was pleased when Resident Evil: Code Veronica X was given such a treatment. While this installment hasn’t aged as well as Resident Evil 4 (also released on the Live Arcade), the game is still fun and a worthwhile experience for survival horror fans. As with most of the earlier Resident Evil games, the main problems are camera and controls. The “tank” like controls can be trouble to adjust to and even when you’ve gotten the hang of it, the system isn’t great. I would have loved to found an updated control option, but Code Veronica X handles just like the versions that proceeded this one. The camera is usually solid, but the fixed angles sometimes make it tough to see all of the visuals and you can miss important things at times.

With the complaints out of the way, there is also a lot to like about Code Veronica X. The campaign is an extensive one, with a lot of content to explore and plenty of tough enemies to tangle with. The level of challenge is high, but the game doesn’t feel cheap, you just need to pay attention and make good use of your resources. You need to manage your items well, because this game doesn’t give you a lot of valuable stuff, so you can run out in a rush. Veterans of Resident Evil expect that of course, so make your bullets count and don’t waste health items. I also love the puzzles found here, as not all of them are as simple as the ones seen in similar games. This is going to frustrate some, as you have to explore and put some thought into the puzzles at times, but I think that is great and adds a lot to the experience. So be prepared for a challenge in terms of puzzles, combat, and item management, as all will test your skills.

This version of Code Veronica X has been given an HD coat of paint, with great results. While still a little dated, the visuals have been perked up quite a bit, so the game looks better than ever. The character models seem to have gotten the most benefit, but environments also seem more refined in this presentation. And in a game that relies on atmosphere as much as this one, the added visual detail can go a long way. Code Veronica X isn’t going to bowl over newcomers like Resident Evil 4, but for fans of old school survival horror, there is a lot to like with this game. You’ll have to keep your skills sharp and be patient with the camera & controls at times, but Code Veronica X is worth some effort. If you’ve played through this before, you’ll enjoy the new visuals and for new folks, a long, challenging campaign awaits. So if you’re a fan of the Resident Evil series or survival horror in general, Code Veronica X HD is worth a look.

Video: How does it look?

The game looks better than ever, thanks to the HD spruce up I mentioned above. All aspects of Code Veronica X look improved, especially the character models. Even if you haven’t played the original for a while, you will notice immediate improvements, the HD revamp is that good. For fans, a great chance to see the game like never before, while newcomers will be impressed with the visual overhaul.

Audio: How does it sound?

The sound design seems to be untouched, complete with hilarious voice work that is a blast to experience. The audio here is solid in technical aspects, while the voice work is high camp, but that just adds to the fun. I do wish there was a little more kick behind the firearms, but overall, the audio here is just fine.
