Plot: What’s it about?

A golf game might not seem like a natural choice for the Worms franchise, but Worms Crazy Golf is indeed awesome. This isn’t a flimsy golf game with some Worms shoehorned in either, not even close. Team 17 has integrated the sport of golf into the Worms world in seamless fashion. You can do all the stuff you’d expect from a Worms game, such as killing other players, collecting power ups, and using all kinds of weapons. Yes, the sheep are on the golf course. The basic golf mechanic is implemented just as you’d expect, choosing a trajectory, then charging up a meter to determine power. So if you’ve played a Worms game before, you’ll know what to do right from the start. You’ll need to finish the holes with par scores, or face failure and start over. This isn’t just a simple swing either, as this is Worms Crazy Golf.

You’ll need to have good aim of course, but these courses are littered with hazards much more dangerous than sand traps. If you hit a land mine, your ball is toast. If a sheep wanders too close to your ball, it becomes lunch. And with other worms on the course as well, you’ll have precious little time to relax. You do have some tricks up your sleeve however, as special shots can be used to give yourself an edge. Unleash abilities that alter time and gravity, or just attach a parachute to your ball. This is a Worms game, so of course there are ample options to create chaos and bend the rules. If you finish your course and want more action on the green, Worms Crazy Golf is happy to oblige.

In addition to the standard golf game mode, you can take on various challenges to put your skills to the test. If you want to pass them all, you’d better practice…a lot. The challenges require slick skill shots, quick reflexes, and patience, but they’re also a lot of fun and well worth a look. The main courses also have some replay value, as you can rack up coins and score some crates. These items allow you to customize your golfer and the options are extensive. You can change the way your golfer looks, the style of ball used, and even the voice of your worm. I love unlockables, so being able to hunt down the coolest outfits and such really adds some replay value. And when you play the multi-player modes, of course you’ll want to sport the best of the best, so hit the links and chase down the goodies. Worms Crazy Golf is simply a blast and earns a high recommendation.

Video: How does it look?

The visuals here are what you’d expect from a Worms game, bright and colorful with a cartoon slant. The character designs are funny and the animations follow that trend. The course designs are rock solid, with fun little details and great themes, so the game has that Worms sense of humor, without question. Bright colors and a level of detail with the Worms signature visuals, not much else we could ask for here.

Audio: How does it sound?

The sound design is effective, with light music to keep a brisk atmosphere, as well as wacky sound effects. The game is silly in nature, so the off the wall sound effects fit it quite well. The voice work is a lot of fun as well, with some memorable lines and choice one liners.
