Plot: What’s it about?

What is it about this movie that made us like it? Probably the same thing about Mary that made every male character in the movie like her…That’s right-There’s Something About Mary is finally out on DVD and it looks and sounds great!

The story concentrates on Mary Jensen Matthews (Cameron Diaz) and Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller). Ted and Mary went to high school together in Rhode Island, but both have since gone their seperate ways. Even after a disasterous prom (I don’t want to describe the scene, but if you haven’t heard about it, it’s best left unsaid), Ted still remains infatuated with Mary, so he hires a private investigator, Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her.

They get reunited in Miami (where Mary now lives) and start dating. Things are starting to go Ted’s way for a change and life couldn’t be any better. This is when the proverbial s#@% hits the fan. You see, Pat (the P.I.) has also become interested in Mary and is passing himself off as a genuine “nice guy” to try and win Mary’s heart. As if that weren’t enough, Mary’s “friend”, Tucker (Lee Evans) may or may not have the same thing for her as well (I don’t want to give anything away). And then there’s this little bit about Ted being wanted for murder, but I don’t even want to go there…

Things go from bad to worse as it all spirals into an insane ending scene. I’ll just say this: “Guy has fetish for shoes, Brett Favre and big teeth” you figure it out. Aside from all of this, it’s still a very entertaining movie and a good love story. There are lots of other great things this movie has to offer and all are funny. It’s clear why this movie took the country by storm last year—It’s FUNNY!

Video: How does it look?

Fox just decided to pull the plug after their “Alien” series. Still, the movie looks great. This being a new movie, it should, but there was hardly any shimmering and absolutely NO artifacting at all. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it’s 16:9 enhanced (I checked, just to make sure and it isn’t, oh well…).

Audio: How does it sound?

A great spacial mix in Dolby Digital 5.1 format. There’s Something About Mary has very good sound, I didn’t really expect it too, but I was pleasantly suprised. The ending musical montage sounds really good as well. Awesome sound!

Supplements: What are the extras?

The directors give their commentary much like they did in “Kingpin. There’s a lot of “yeah, that guy is a friend of ours and that lady was in the last scene too…” stuff, not the most technical commentary, but then again the last thing this movie could be associated with is technical achievement. Also included are trailers, a featurette and a karoke music video that’r really fun. If they can just do 16:9 enhancement it would be perfect. Still, this has more than it’s share of extras and is well worth owning.
