Plot: What’s it about?
Hail to the King, baby, because some of finest live performances have arrived on our beloved shiny little discs. That’s right, Elvis himself has entered the digital building, with The Alternate Aloha Concert. I’m sure many of you, at least the Elvis fans out there, have seen or at least heard of Elvis’ legendary Aloha Concert, where he wowed the masses in one of his best performances. The Aloha Concert was simply magical for Elvis fans and those who enjoy a good show, and was shown in forty countries, viewed by one and a half billion people, that’s right one and a half billion people! Two days before the Aloha Concert, Elvis took the same stage, and performed a similar set of songs, a type of rehearsal for the big show. But this warm up proved just as powerful, and is presented here as The Alternate Aloha Concert.
This release contains some of Elvis’ best known hits, and offers a chance to see him right before one of his most memorable performances. Of course, countless millions upon millions of fans of Elvis will clamor to pick up this disc, but I think anyone who is entertained by fantastic live performances should give this a look as well. While this concert served as a rehearsal, Elvis kicks ass like it was the show itself. Elvis doesn’t just perform his high profile songs either, he breaks out some lesser known songs as well. Although as popular as Elvis is, I don’t think he has a low profile song…perhaps lower profile? In any case, this release contains a wonderful variety of tunes, a selection that should please fans of the jump suited one.
While this release is just the concert itself, no bonus footage of any kind, I think a purchase is more than justified for those types who engage in pilgrimages to Graceland or have those velvet paintings of Elvis. For others, a rental will be in order, to judge for yourself if you want to add this to your collection. You’ll be treated to about an hour of classic Elvis, what more can you people want? Also, if this is your type of thing, make sure you also visit the actual Aloha Concert, also available on DVD.
Video: How does it look?
The Alternate Aloha Concert is presented in the original full frame aspect ratio. The image looks about the same as broadcast quality, although this transfer appears a little dark. Since I’ve never seen this concert before, I am not sure if the image has always been this dark or not. The colors are very bright though, especially the lights and the stage setup, which are quite colorful. I didn’t see any compression errors or serious print damage either, and aside from the overly dark contrast, this is a fine visual presentation.
Audio: How does it sound?
This release uses a Dolby Digital 5.1 track for audio, and it makes the surrounds come to life, in a major way. Every speaker in the house will be shaking, especially during the faster paced songs. The instruments and vocals are mixed well on this track, and they never overshadow one another, providing a full and rich audio experience.
Supplements: What are the extras?
This disc includes a slide show, which contains various stills from the concert.
